Trade Deadline Looms

Dewar Looking Hard for Reinforcements for Keystone Cup Bound Storm

With only hours left until the junior hockey trade deadline, Kamloops Storm owner and GM, Barry Dewar has a half a dozen cards left to wheel and deal with. According to Barry last night at the Mac Island Sport Centre, he has 2 players on the line to sign today. He said during our 1st period intermission interview that he was looking for guys to fill spots in at forward, defense and a 3rd quality goaltender for the playoff run.

The deadline is for acquiring players that are carded elsewhere. There is an additional month available to sign players that are not carded (free agents) in any league that are sitting around waiting for a phone call.

Barry was pretty tight lipped about any potential signings so we will have to wait until Monday to find out any moves he makes.

I'll be taking a break from broadcasting and blogging the Storm games. Mike Potestio and Barry Dewar are expected to pick up the slack for the next 3 home games as I will be touring Eastern Europe watching my son play in the Austrian Professional League... stay tuned to this blog as I will submit some updates while we tour Austria, Slovenia, Croatia and Hungary (providing that I have decent internet access).

I expect that team asst trainer Jeremy Salamandyk will provide updates on Storm games while I'm away.

We will be back for the home game against the North Okanagan Knights on Jan 30.

Dewar also needs to look at his coaching staff. You can see why the Blazers got rid of Hawgood. Just because you played in the NHL doesn't make you a coach. The game has changed from when he played, it is faster, and with bigger players. Hawgood likes to play his small defenseman who are only sixteen in crucial situations. Those two players log more ice time than any other D-players. I know one is his son...but really doesn't winning the game become more important now than getting your kid noticed. If he was a great player than maybe...but he isn't.
Hawgood spends more time yelling at the officials than coaching. Dewar time to look at the real problem...maybe the coach.

    hi dave.
why wouldnt you have locals on the team?
start of the year it seemed it was 90 percent local. after some moves and pickups the locals are at eleven players. "anon" seems worried.
kamloops has a great amount of players to choose from that can play this level, just look at chase's first year of picks. the locals have earned their spot and could play on any other team in the ki. teams can always be improved but at what cost? cash? futures?
to make a trade in this league or bchl doesnt mean the player will report. school, work, girlfriends etc. all figure in a players decision to move or not. it's gotta work both ways. still have another month or so to pick up other players.

I dont think the Blazers got rid of Hawgood because he was a bad coach. I think it was more a case of players or coach situation.
Look now and see who is left on that team since then. but that is a whole other mess/story in itself.
I will agree on the rookie defense point though. I also think his son plays a bit too much in crucial situations, but look at what we have also. Only three vet defensemen.
the pp and pk are 2 minutes long. a player cant play a 2min shift so you gotta play em. I do like that the coach finally started putting vet and rookie pairings togehter, cause at the start of the season it was scary a few times.
these two 16 yr olds will come along fine this year and next yr will be even better. I see defrias being a standout in this league next year. he sees the ice well and makes some smart moves. his size is a bit lacking but his effort and giv'r is what will make him a fave next year.

How disheartening for the players to know that the owner just didn't care enough to make sure they had a competitive team!

The fact is...it is what it is! As for the above comment, if you watch the game closely you will see that PP & PK are played by the same players the whole 2 minutes. What happened to 45 sec - 1min. shifts. Most times the player is so tired he can't skate to the bench. The players have been taught to have selfish play... no team work!!! As I quoted "It is what it is"....

    call it what you want.
sounds like you think you know quite a bit. hockey is a game that can be looked at and taught many different ways. losing is hard and i guess there are always people quick to point a finger. if you are that disgruntled why do you watch? and follow so closely. maybe stay home and enjoy that half empty glass you're drinking out of.

Well, if I stay home, that's $10 not in Dewar's pocket. I guess the truth hurts...doesn't it?

Good point dude.Your right....So I have quit giving my money to the kamloops storm, dont need the ten Keystone ticket packages I was planning on picking up for the family. As a matter of fact, probably will NEVER spend a cent on the Storm again.Blazers and Vipers can have my hockey entertainment money. So,I can sit and drink from my half full glass.......and you can sit by yourself in the dark at MacAuthur Island........
